CHAPTER 14

Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

Caleb stared down the barrel of the pump action shotgun. If the man pulled the trigger from this range, Caleb would be dead in an instant, “I’m not going to do that. I’m here to talk. Call Tobias and tell him Caleb is out front.”

“I said get on the ground!” demanded the guard holding the shotgun.

“Nope. You don’t want to be responsible for turning this into something it was never supposed to be. Call Tobias. He’s going to want to hear what I have to say.”

The guard turned to his compatriot wearing the red hat, who nodded his consent. The guard glared at Caleb. “Move and I’ll kill ya.”

The man wearing the red cap put in a call over the walkie-talkie. He spoke low enough that Caleb couldn’t hear. After the transmission was complete, he walked toward Caleb and stood next to the guard with the camo hat. “We’ll know soon enough.”

Less than a minute passed before a souped-up, four-seater Can-Am ATV drove up to the security outpost. Caleb frowned when he saw that Bobby Ray was the man driving. Tobias Koontz was in the front passenger seat. Behind him was, Tommy Whitlock, one of the bouncers from Koon Dawg’s that Caleb had once worked with.

The person sitting behind Bobby Ray was someone Caleb did not expect. He felt nauseous and shaky. The ground beneath his feet suddenly seemed unsteady.

Eric Koontz got out of the ATV and assumed his position as head of the family. His eyes seethed as he walked toward Caleb. “Obviously, my first instinct is to take you back to the barn, cut you up, and feed you to the hogs. But I have to admit, you’ve piqued my curiosity showing up like this. Plus, after you set us up and had me thrown in the slammer, I had a chance to reflect on life. I learned to be patient.

“The pigs aren’t going anywhere. So we’ve got time. Tell me, are you seriously that gutsy or are you just crazier than an outhouse rat? Because you’ve gotta know, when you sold out our entire family, ruined our business, shot Bobby Ray, and threw all our lives into general disarray, we’re probably going to have some hard feelings over the whole episode.”

Caleb summoned the courage to speak. “I’m not here to lay blame, but I would like to point out that you initiated our disagreement by threatening Hellen Stevens’ farm.”

Eric seemed amused. “You equate that with what you people did to our place of business, our family, to Bobby Ray?”

Caleb replied, “Spray me with water I’ll spray you with blood every time, Eric.”

Bobby Ray’s face turned beet red. He raised a short-barreled shotgun.
